Indonesia culture dress is just one the richness of culture in Indonesia besides having lots of customs, traditions, and traditional food as well as dance and house. It is because Indonesia consists of many ethnics and each ethnic has its own customs and traditions. Since centuries ago till now, Indonesians are still proudly wearing their traditional dress, especially during any special occasion. You may know it and even wear it because you like it. Let’s take a look at what is special from Indonesia’s traditional dress.

From Traditional to National Dress

Batik stands out among many traditional dress and attire. It comes from Java and Bali. Batik becomes a cultural dominance due to the prominence of the traditional attire to Indonesia’s advancements as well as politics. In some cultures, certain motifs of Batik only reserved for royal families. This means that mere and ordinary people are not allowed to wear those motifs. You can visit the Palace of Yogyakarta to know what motifs they are. However, due to batik has become national costumes, people can use it daily despite the motifs. Moreover, batik is a uniform for junior and high school students in Indonesia. 

Batik

Batik is a cloth with motifs or patterns which is made by using traditional techniques. Different localities have different materials and patterns. In short, each region has its own unique patterns. Back then, batik was used by wrapping the cloth around the hips and it is called jarik. However, batik has evolved to a much more modern appearance. Batik now has been sewn and made for formal shirts for men, dresses, skirts, and even handbags. You may experience Indonesia culture shock on a certain day where you find most of the people wear batik to go to work and school. Considered as a formal dress and usually is worn during formal meetings or weddings. 

Kebaya

Another Indonesia culture dress is Kebaya. Back then, it is a traditional costume for women in Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese culture. Now, it has been recognized as a national costume for women as well. Just like batik, different localities produce different motifs and types of kebaya. Kebaya is generally made from sheer fabric. Kebaya is a must wear a dress every 21^st April every year to commemorate Kartini, who is an important figure for fighting for women’s rights and emancipation.
