Maybe some don’t know or are curious about the origin of this MotoGP venue. Here we have summarized the history of the Mandalika Circuit, which was compiled from various sources.

In addition to the 2022 MotoGP, the Mandalika Circuit has also managed to host the WSBK (World Superbike) that was successfully held in November 2021.

The circuit has various advantages that other courses do not have, such as being treated to panoramic views of beautiful hills and surrounded by a clear blue sea.

Not only that, but this circuit also uses asphalt with better quality compared to other circuits.

For the asphalt manufacturing process, the Mandalika Circuit has relied on a new asphalt technology, SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt), which is of the best quality.

Later, the 2021 WSBK and 2022 MotoGP racers can feel pleasant while racing at the Mandalika Circuit.

History of the Mandalika International Street Circuit

Mandalika is a tourist area located in the southern part of Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara. Mandalika became a tourism Special Economic Zone (SEZ) through Government Regulation (PP) no. 52 in 2014 and has been inaugurated since 2017.

This tourist area not only has a charming beach and sea charm. Mandalika has a land area of 1,030 hectares and faces the Indian Ocean to become a potential tourist area in the province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

The name Mandalika itself comes from a legendary figure, namely Putri Mandalika, who is known to have a beautiful and charming face. Every year, the people of Central Lombok celebrate the Bau Nyale ceremony, which is a ritual to find sea worms that are believed to be the incarnation of Princess Mandalika.

With this ceremony, it can attract local and international tourists. Not surprisingly, many consider Mandalika to be ‘The New Bali.’

It should be noted that the Mandalika SEZ is an old project designed during the President Suharto era when the Director-General of Tourism was held by Joop Ave. In 1989, the government-appointed LTDC (Lombok Tourism Development Corporation) as the executor of this Mandalika SEZ project.

The project development covers an area of 1,175 hectares on the south coast of Lombok Island, which has a coastline of 9 km in Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency.

Mandalika Circuit Construction

In 2018, the Mandalika circuit began to be built, equipped with various facilities such as nature tourism and hotels.

The circuit’s construction was entrusted to ITDC (Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation) in collaboration with VCGP (Vinci Construction Grands Project). VGC is a global construction subsidiary from France.

Constructing the Mandalika circuit is estimated at around IDR 4.5 trillion. This circuit was built on the desire of Indonesia to be able to host MotoGP.

Second Circuit in Indonesia to Hold MotoGP

As is known, the Mandalika Circuit is planned to host the 2022 MotoGP. But in fact, Indonesia is not the first time to host this prestigious motorcycle-racing event.

In the 1996-1997 period, Indonesia hosted the MotoGP, where the engine specifications for racing were still 500 ccs incapacity. This MotoGP is held at the Sentul Circuit, Bogor.

After about 25 years have passed, MotoGP is finally planned to be held again in Indonesia, specifically at the Mandalika Circuit, NTB.

Has 17 Corners

The following fact is that the Mandalika Circuit has 17 corners. In addition, the circuit also has a total length of 4,310 km, so this distance is considered sufficient for an international standard circuit.

First Street Circuit for MotoGP

When it was first conceived, the Mandalika International Street Circuit was planned to be made with the concept of a street circuit. Part of the circuit will be opened to the public, making it the first street circuit in MotoGP.

In fact, the concept of this circuit is usually not very well received by most racers.
